Goal nets, both for outdoor and indoor fields, are made of high-quality materials that provide adequate durability, flexibility and resistance to weather conditions and intensive use. The most commonly used materials are polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE). Each of these materials has its own specific properties that affect the quality of the mesh and its strength.
- Polypropylene is one of the most commonly used materials for mesh production. Its main advantage is its high tensile strength, which means that the net retains its shape even under the impact of heavy ball strikes. Polypropylene nets are also characterized by high elasticity and low water absorption, making them resistant to changing weather conditions such as rain, snow and UV radiation. Another advantage of PP is its resistance to abrasion, making it an ideal material for playing fields where nets are heavily used. Thanks to its durability, polypropylene works well in professional sports facilities.
- Polyethylene is an equally popular material, but with slightly different properties. It is characterized by higher chemical resistance and excellent UV resistance, which makes nets made of PE an ideal choice for use on open fields. PE nets are lightweight yet highly durable, allowing them to retain their properties in harsh weather conditions. In addition, they are less susceptible to degradation by sunlight, which extends their life and ensures long-lasting use even on outdoor facilities.
- One of the key aspects that affect the quality of goal nets is their joining technology. Increasingly, knotless technology is being used, which provides greater strength and even tension to the net. The lack of knots eliminates areas where the net could be weakened, reducing the risk of abrasion and damage. Nets made with this technology are more resistant to abrasion and last longer, making them particularly suitable for playing fields where they are heavily used.
- The thickness of the string is another important parameter that affects the strength of the net and its ability to absorb impacts. Nets are available in various thicknesses, usually from 2.5 mm to 5 mm. Thinner nets (2.5 mm) are ideal for less intensive use, such as school playgrounds, while thicker nets (4 mm and 5 mm) are designed for more demanding applications, such as professional sports matches. The thicker cord better resists stretching and impact, which is crucial in situations where the net is used intensively.
- Many mesh models use additional reinforcements, such as hemmed edges or built-in weights. Hemmed edges increase the stability of the mesh and prevent it from wearing out quickly. Lower edge weights, used especially in beach handball nets, help keep the net under proper tension, even in difficult conditions such as wind. In addition, nets equipped with elastic cords or other fastening systems easily integrate into the goal structure, increasing their functionality and durability.

Thanks to UV stabilization, the nets not only maintain their aesthetics longer, but are also less susceptible to damage from exposure to the sun's rays, extending their life.

2 Dimensions, depth and adaptation of nets to different types of goals

Precise adjustment of the net to a particular goal is fundamental, as it affects the safety of use, ball cushioning and the aesthetics and durability of the entire structure. The dimensions of the nets, both width, height and depth, are an industry standard, but they should be adjusted to the specifics of the goals used in different sports and at different levels of competition.
- Width and height of nets: The most common dimensions for handball nets are 3.0 meters wide and 2.0 meters high. This is the standard adopted for both professional and recreational pitches, in line with international regulations. However, it is crucial that the net is perfectly matched to the goal structure. If the net is not properly installed or its dimensions are not appropriate, unnecessary stress can occur, which will shorten the life of the product. In the case of non-standard size goals, it is worth noting the possibility of ordering customized nets, which will ensure a perfect fit for your specific needs.
- Net depth - why is it so important? While the width and height of the net are set by regulation, the depth of the net is a variable that can significantly affect the functionality of the goal. Net depth refers to the distance from the back posts of the goal to the point where the net is attached to the bottom edge of the goal. Typically, the depth of goal nets ranges from 50 cm to 120 cm, and its selection depends on the purpose of the goal and the intensity of the games.
- The top depth (the distance from the back edge of the goal at its highest point) and the bottom depth (from the back edge of the goal at the base) affect how energy is dissipated when the ball makes contact with the net. In goals with less depth (e.g., 50 cm), the net will be tighter, making the ball bounce with more force and less cushioning. On the other hand, in goals with greater depth (e.g., 100 cm or more), the net provides better distribution of the ball's impact, increasing its cushioning and improving user safety. Longer nets, thanks to deeper pockets, effectively stop the ball and minimize the risk of the ball slipping out of the goal, which is particularly important in professional games where precision and safety are a priority.
- The role of the ball catcher and its impact on the functionality of the net: Soccer netting is an advanced version of standard goal nets. A ball catcher is an additional part of the net that creates a pocket at the bottom of the goal, allowing the ball to be stopped inside the net after it falls into the goal. Thanks to this solution, the ball does not bounce with force back onto the field. The ball net is particularly important on fields where the intensity of shots is high, as it prevents the ball from returning to the field uncontrollably, which could lead to collisions between players.
- Nets with non-standard dimensions and applications: There are also goal nets on the market with non-standard dimensions that can be adapted to different types of goals, not only in handball. It is worth mentioning the nets used in beach handball goals, which need to be adapted to more demanding conditions - these nets are usually equipped with additional reinforcements, such as weights on the bottom edge, which ensure the stability of the net even when playing in windy conditions.
- Net installation and additional reinforcements: An important aspect regarding goal nets is their proper installation. Most nets come with reinforced meshes and flexible fastening cords that make it easy to attach them to the goal structure. It is important that the net is well tensioned, but at the same time not too tight, so that it can properly disperse the force of the ball's impact. It is worth noting that many modern nets are equipped with hems on the bottom and side edges, which increases their durability and resistance to mechanical damage. Reinforced hems protect the net from abrasion, which can occur with intensive use, especially in places where the net meets the elements of the goal.
